Travel
Travel is one very important aspect of the gameplay in Mech Wars. There are several methods for moving your units around the planet, of which the basic method is walking by foot. This is, needless to say, also the slowest travel method. But fear not, there are many other ways of travelling.
The basic travel times on Terra-Xi are: 4 hours to move to another ward in the same country as you are in, 16 hours to another country (in the same continent as you are on), and 32 hours to another continent. The travel times within the same country as you are in will never decrease, it is 4 hours no matter how much you improve your knowledge about travelling.
Unit Improvements
The most basic improvements you can do is to research better technologies for moving the units themselves. Please note that this has little to do with the performance of units in battle, just their travel time.

Dropships
The next level in improving travel times is to use dropships. These are unarmed transport ships that carry several mechs from point A to point B much faster than they would be able to under their own power.

Inter-Planetary Subway System
Commonly known as the IPS, this is the most advanced form of travel on Terra-Xi. Using subterranean carts, or pods, to transport mechs, soldiers, and their supplies through and extensive planetary network of rail-tubes to the front line. Strict policing by the Sol Peace Force prevents sabotage of the rail-tubes, or attacks on units in transit. The tubes are regularly maintained, however, there is still a small risk of failure or interception of the pods.
The infrastructure of the IPS is already in place, and the pods are constructed during the research. Therefore, once the research is complete, there is no need to build anything else to take advantage of the IPS.

As already mentioned, you will not need anything to use the IPS as soon as you have any of these technologies. That is the reason you will not get that big of an improvement from Advanced Dropship Technology over Basic IPS Technology. The Enhanced IPS Technology, however, will give you a huge speed increase, as will you get with Advanced IPS Technology.
